They close their eyes.
They keep their eyelids closed.
They are the family figures the artist paints. Brothers, sisters, cousins, all from the African diaspora: the new black generation.
What do these closed eyelids mean?
What does this withdrawal signify?
Daydreaming, melancholy, worry, serenity, resignation?
Do they refuse to see the world, this complex reality which questions both their future and their identity?
Do they give themselves a moment of reflection, a pause, a breath?
These intimate paintings were mostly produced during the suspenseful lockdown: the LIENS series could then be read as a state of affairs, a peaceful family album.
And soon after, there were demonstrations in the United States, France and elsewhere, denouncing discrimination, police brutality and institutionalized racism.
Current events disrupt the way we look at the works and question the artist's work.
What place can the African diaspora occupy in French society today?
What representation is possible? For what visibility?
Alex Ayivi's characters invite us to a moment of reflection.

Alex Ayivi

Born French to Togolese parents, Alex Ayivi grew up in the Paris region. Today, he believes his work as an artist draws on the two cultures he inherited. A graduate of the Beaux-Arts de Bourges and the ENSAV La Cambre in Brussels, he has exhibited at the Centre de la Gravure de La Louvière (Belgium) and the Cité Internationale des Arts (Paris).
