Ostraca

Technique: digital sculpture
Exhibition available in 2 formats for outdoor use and 1 format for indoor use.

In ancient Greece, ostracism was a vote by which the assembly of citizens pronounced the banishment of one of its own. It was a simple measure of political removal, a vote of no confidence in an influential citizen suspected of aspiring to personal power. His name was inscribed on a pottery shard known as an ostrakon.

As the writing faded, the banishment ended.

Ostraca is this wall that isolated us from the city, from the community, from ourselves...

During the first lockdown, in order to keep track of these moments when the whole world was in slow motion and uncertain, Chemsedine Herriche asked members of his digital community to send him photos of the skies seen from their windows or of the light in their homes.

…then the wall broke, the artifacts remained, etching the snapshot, the fleeting possibility of elsewhere, a narrow window on the world.
