Jean Edelbluth

Symphonic Banners

Technique: textile compositions.
Exhibition available in several formats.

Jean Edelbluth reports that he was first moved by words, necessarily inscribing his poetic research within his artistic research. A banner, says the dictionary, is a feudal military flag, a rallying standard. A symphony is a collection of sounds, of noises forming a harmony. Do these definitions enlighten us? Perhaps!

Let us now ask the artist: influenced by American abstraction and minimalist thought, encouraged by the contemporary revival of geometric abstract painting (particularly British), Jean Edelbuth says that he remains attached to the grid as a means of "composing, making colors sing, suspending the expression of joy contained in forms." He also states that Hans Arp is never far away.

“I have always loved looking at landscapes. I grew up in the countryside, and the layout of the fields is imprinted on me. Collage is a gateway to what seems to be painting for me today: constructing a phrasing of lines and shapes that call for contemplation. The colored fields return to the canvas.”

And then Jean Edelbluth adds: "I have the strong impression that art must proceed from joy more than any other ambition. It is the immediacy of the composition that imposes itself first. The poetics of movement follows. I do not know how to account for coherence. It is a quest. My faith is the driving force."
