Joannie Lafrenière

Playtime

Technique: photography.
Exhibition available in several formats.

Photographer and filmmaker Joannie Lafrenière never travels alone. In her suitcase laden with costumes and accessories, her alter egos eagerly await where the wind will take her. As soon as she drops off her luggage, she spots with her amused eye the vernacular architecture that will enhance her wardrobe, and matches her outfits with humor and a strong taste for kitsch to the landscapes she discovers: her self-portraits are never the result of chance.

In 2016, in Hallandale, a small seaside resort north of Miami, during a filming session on the Snowbirds, Canadian retirees who settle in Florida, mainly during the winter, Joannie Lafrenière meets Yvette, an octogenarian vacationer, among the residents of a mobile home park. A sincere friendship quickly develops between the two women and Joannie invites Yvette to accompany her in her tangy productions. Accomplices and flirtatious, the two ladies thus become the Hallandale Twins, timeless characters, challenging the taboos surrounding the passage of time.

The Playtime series takes a tender look at the "golden age" and the leisure societies to which these migratory birds fly each year in search of an earthly paradise before the celestial one.
