A woman, inaccessible. A brown rectangle.
A palace (or is it a church?), almost a coffin.
A man and maybe a small sphinx (a lion with a woman's head, a woman with a lion's body) or maybe not...

Born from research on the surface of rocks, evoking by their simple composition the setting of some ancestral play, the paintings of this series are like enigmas, where the almost documentary reality of the rocks coexists with mythical figures and schematized architectural elements.

Knowing Matteo Gubellini's lifelong passion for comics, the viewer might be tempted to invent (or reinvent) a story for himself... But he might also see in each of these works the traces of the artist's questioning of man's place in the world, of his desires and fears, of the roles he sees himself assigned in this game, this theater that is life - each canvas capturing with implacable clarity the complexity of the dream or reflection from which it proceeds.
