In March 2020, at the beginning of the lockdown, Elisabeth Llach received a package of old magazines featuring the works of great painters: Botticelli, Fra Angelico, Mantegna, Tiepolo, Tintoretto, Veronese, Rogier van der Weyden... The reproductions are poor but touching. Reading the old masters makes one forget the uncertain period.
Elisabeth Llach reproduces some of the details on paper, sometimes incorporating fluorescent shades. The speed of her brushwork allows her to lightly break free from classical models. From this work, the series Lightly revisiting the ancients was born.
And then, these paintings are joined by figures of women with mannered gestures, taken from fashion magazines. The title of the series Hold your own sounds like a double exhortation: yes, you are capable of defending yourself, yes, you are capable of doing just as well...

Elisabeth Llach

Born in Switzerland to a German mother and a Catalan father, and graduating in 1995 from the Lausanne Cantonal School of Art - ECAL, Elisabeth Llach works around the representation of the feminine, drawing her inspiration from both popular culture and art history.
