Gli specchi sfuggenti - The elusive mirrors

Technique: charcoal on paper.
Exhibition available in several formats.

Born from research on the surface of rocks, the drawings in the series Gli specchi sfuggenti (The elusive mirrors) are part of the questioning of creativity as a cause of solitude (and vice versa), a theme that runs through Matteo Gubellini's visual and editorial work.

The artist has always been torn between his desire to participate in the world - to live the thousand adventures of Walt Disney - and the temptation to hide from it. Composing his landscapes with a limited number of elements (a lake or a hole, full or empty, a few upright rocks, as if emerging, a naked man - timeless or a beast returned from the primeval times), Matteo Gubellini evokes in delicate variations waiting, doubt, desire, temptation, the emptiness of existence, the endless cycle of human questioning...

Are we in a dream? Are we on a psychoanalyst's couch? Are we at some crucial moment in a myth or a parable? What could this sophisticated work on the matter of rocks be the pretext for?

We then remember the words of Roger Caillois in the dedication of his collection Pierres:
"I speak of stones: algebra, vertigo and order; of stones, hymns and quincunxes; of stones, darts and corollas, edge of the dream, leaven and image... I speak of stones older than life and which remain after it on the cooled planets... I speak of bare stones, fascination and glory, where a mystery is hidden and at the same time revealed, slower, vaster and more serious than the destiny of a passing species."
