Guillaume Martial

Folding, 2014-2016

Technique: Photographs
Exhibition available in 2 formats for outdoor use and 1 format for indoor use.

"Folding" is the English translation of the adjective "pliant": a folding chair is a folding chair.

"Folding" is also the name of a travel camera which, as its name suggests, folds easily.

"Folding", finally, is the name under which Guillaume Martial has grouped some of his works on space and its bodily appropriation.

In "Folding," a lunar athlete (played by the photographer) plays at folding the reality of various spaces that could be (or could have been dedicated) to sporting activities: because nothing is less certain.

Behind the gestures that may remind burlesque fans of the great Jacques Tati, Guillaume Martial's photographs defy gravity and instill doubt. It's up to the viewer to ask:

What can I see?

What do I need to see?

What (high-low) meaning does this have?

So could photography be an illusion?
