Drifting shapes 2020

Technique: drypoint engraving, chine collé.
Exhibition available in several formats.

“Printing generally means making multiple copies of the same image. I deliberately print only one original image from a plate. I engrave on thin aluminum plates that I cut to size. I ink the plate and then use a technique called “chine collé”: I first cut the sheet of Washi (a very fragile Japanese paper) to the exact size of the plate. I place the Washi on the inked plate (this is when the ink transfers from the aluminum to the paper). I then coat the back of the Washi with glue and place the plate and paper assembly under a sheet of thicker etching paper. Under the effect of the press, the piece of Washi sticks to the etching paper and detaches from the plate. The final image will depend on the density of the India ink, the color and opacity of the Washi, and any inclusions (petals, fibers), and of course, the color of the sheet support.”

I am fascinated by the textures of print. I draw patterns as simple as possible, hoping that simplicity will lead me to profound expression. When I create, I am always eager to renew myself, I am attentive to the emergence in my mind of forms I would never have seen. Perhaps someone will notice my desire to pick up the pieces of faded memories? The encounter with Art is mysterious; it brings up untidy memories and unconsciously feeds the story we know about ourselves of things we have not experienced. I want you to surrender to your perceptions, to see the painting for yourself.
