“The Champion series was born from a Papier Magazine initiative dedicated to the 98 Football World Cup. I had discovered the architecture of trophies, which could be dismantled at will, and I started by making totems bearing the image of the 1998 football players. I subsequently expanded the tribute paid to the great figures of sport by making statuettes
representing legendary boxers. The trophies are made from modules made of wood, ceramic, plastic, iron, and marble, assembled on a threaded rod. The sculptures become fetishes, statuettes to which a powerful cult is devoted.
Graphically, I find the world of sport fascinating: the jerseys, the ball, the haircuts, everything is very distinctive. My sources of inspiration can come from anywhere, but the heart of my practice remains popular art; sport, dinosaurs, religion, very accessible things. I like the idea of speaking to as many people as possible.
In my drawing practice, I am clearly more interested in the human and the idea of deformation, torsion and tension in bodies. Recently, I attended the French arm wrestling championship, during which I took quite a few photos. Perhaps this will influence my work at some point… »
